Abstract

Afterpain can cause significant discomfort in postpartum mothers, manifested as pain, cramps, and abdominal colic. Pain resulting from uterine contractions may interfere with infant care and self-care activities in daily life. Moreover, severe postpartum uterine contraction pain can disrupt rest and contribute to anxiety or depression. Therefore, appropriate nursing management is required to prevent the escalation of pain and maternal discomfort. One evidence-based nursing practice that can be applied by nurses to reduce afterpain is the use of effleurage massage relaxation therapy and music therapy. This study employed an experimental trial design involving five postpartum mothers who underwent vaginal delivery, selected using consecutive sampling. The exclusion criteria included mothers who had cesarean section delivery, those with obstetric emergencies, mothers who were under anesthesia or experiencing disorientation or confusion, those with hearing impairment, and those with mental health disorders. The implementation of evidence-based nursing (EBN) was conducted by providing education through video media regarding afterpain and its management, as well as simulations of effleurage massage and music therapy involving the respondents’ husbands or family members. The results demonstrated that this intervention was effective in reducing afterpain among postpartum mothers.
