Abstract

Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed classes of drugs worldwide in healthcare services, including at community health centers (Puskesmas), and play a vital role in the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. However, irrational use of antibiotics is a major driver of antibiotic resistance. This study aimed to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic use in terms of drug selection, indication, patient suitability, and dosage among patients at UPT Puskesmas Pangkajene, Sidenreng Rappang Regency.

This research employed a quantitative descriptive method by collecting secondary data from medical records of patients who received antibiotic prescriptions for non-pneumonia acute respiratory infections (ARI) at UPT Puskesmas Pangkajene from August to October 2024. A total of 91 samples met the inclusion criteria. The analysis was conducted by comparing the data to the ARI management guidelines issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Health. The findings revealed that the rationality of antibiotic use—based on the appropriateness of drug, dosage, indication, and patient—reached 100%, indicating fully rational use
