Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that remains highly prevalent in Indonesia and has a significant impact on the quality of human resources. One of the risk factors for stunting is low birth weight (LBW). This study aimed to determine the relationship between low birth weight and the incidence of stunting among children aged 0–3 years in the working area of Salotungo Community Health Center, Soppeng Regency.

This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all children under five years of age in the working area of Salotungo Community Health Center. A total of 80 children were included as the study sample using total sampling. Data were obtained from Maternal and Child Health handbooks and integrated health post records. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analyses, with the chi-square test at a significance level of 0.05.

The results showed that the proportion of stunting was higher among children with a history of low birth weight than among children without a history of low birth weight. Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between low birth weight and the incidence of stunting (p < 0.05).

This study concludes that there is a significant relationship between low birth weight and the incidence of stunting. Health workers are encouraged to strengthen growth monitoring for infants with a history of low birth weight and provide nutritional education beginning during pregnancy.
